The Melbourne High School cross country teams’ season is well underway, and the Katz runners are making a name for themselves. The Melbourne community and MHS should be proud of the hard work and effort the cross country athletes have put forth in order to represent their school.
The Melbourne Bearkatz Invitational cross country meet was held Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at the high school. Teams from all over the region traveled to compete with the Katz on their turf. There were 18 teams in attendance and over 450 runners in 4 separate races.
Melbourne had several students earn the distinction of medalist: for the junior girls, Kiley Webb (10:50:22,4th place), for the junior boys, Blake Bledsoe (9:36:47, 9th) and Bradie Gunther (9:37:42,10th), for the senior girls, Emily Gardner (11:10:31, 7th) and Charlee Byram (11:36:03, 11th), and for the senior boys, Kolten Smith (19:35:88, 10th). The junior girls and senior girls both finished 2nd place in the team races.
The group also competed at the Heber Springs Invitational last week. Kiley Webb, a 7th grader, won the 1A-4A Jr. Girls division with a time of 14:15:18. The other Melbourne medalist was Blake Bledsoe, with a time of 13:13:01.
“I am very proud of all my runners. They worked hard all summer and are seeing the fruits of their hard work. We are looking forward to the rest of the season and for continued growth. We have several talented runners who are eager to win a medal in future races,” commented Coach Melody Carroll.
