Melbourne High School Spanish I and II students celebrated Mexico’s “El Día de Los Muertos” (“The Day of the Dead”) the week just prior to November 1-2, 2015, the dates the holiday is traditionally celebrated in Mexico. The Mexican holiday, which at first glance seems to resemble our Halloween, is in fact more like our Memorial Day; the celebration consists of family members gathering together to celebrate the lives of their deceased relatives. Students in Spanish I and Spanish II learned about the holiday and imitated traditional Mexican customs by making los esqueltos (skeletons), papeles picados (cut paper decorations), and las máscaras (masks). To end the unit, students enjoyed a fiesta complete with authentic Mexican dishes and decorations.
