Students in the Melbourne 7th grade Pre-AP English class presented “A Christmas Carol” to Pioneer Nursing home residents and students at both of Melbourne School District’s elementary schools. The students have been busy this semester studying point-of-view, theme, author’s purpose, literary analysis, and much more.   Before beginning the project, the students used Google Classroom to collaboratively write a persuasive letter to MHS principal Jim Carroll explaining how the project would accomplish many of the learning goals listed in the English curriculum.   Guided by their teacher, Joanna Fulbright, the students also wrote letters to Pioneer Nursing Home, Principal Loggains, and Principal Chaney requesting permission to visit their campuses. The young students were also instrumental in writing permission slips and editing play scripts. Dressed in time-relevant costumes and surrounded by self-created props, the 7th graders acted out the story of Ebenezer Scrooge’s stingy ways and lack of Christmas spirit; the play, however, ended happily with the theme identified by students--that promises should always be honored and forgiveness always given.
