The MHS Archery Teams recently attended the sport’s regional tournament held in Batesville, Arkansas. The senior high team took 4th place, just barely missing a shot at the state tournament. Four of Melbourne’s archers placed in the top 100 out of 398 contestants: Ethan Fleming (28th), Evan Ballard(42nd), John Phillip Conrad (63rd), and Kate Shinn (74th). The teams’ coach, Chrystal Conrad, couldn’t have been prouder. “Both teams represented Melbourne well, and I am very pleased with how hard they worked throughout the season. I owe a special thank you to Rhonda Jeffery for assisting me with the teams and to 10th grader Evan Ballard for going above and beyond as my right-hand man. He helped repair the bows and arrows and did an outstanding job of mentoring his teammates.”
MHS implemented its first archery program in 2012 with the help of an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission grant. According to the Commission, the main goal was “to provide a fun, safe environment for participating in archery in the school setting while raising awareness of conservation-related sports, responsibility, and self-esteem. “ Members of the 2015-16 archery teams at Melbourne High are Sarah Coggins, Hayden Jones, Lance Mynatt, Kate Shinn, Brayden Roddy, Payten Mutz-Hutchins, Darrian Woodward, John Wooten, Kelsey Baird, Emily Smallwood, Justin Cain, Ethan Fleming, John Phillip Conrad, Verona Baehr, Dylan Faulkner, Travis Farmer, Tabatha Wooten, Autumn Kyral, Jared Stringer, Jody Hacker, Amanda Henry, Rebecca Henry, Madison Barnett, Joseph Jeffery, Evan Ballard, Zoie Finley, Bradley Smith, and Cody Turnbow.
