Students in Spanish classes at Melbourne High School recently completed a unit celebrating the Mexican holiday “Cinco de Mayo,” which stands for May 5th. On that date in 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army, making it a date to commemorate; the Mexicans were greatly outnumbered and lacked the arsenal and training the French army possessed, but on that day, in the city of Puebla, they defended their beloved country and prevailed. As part of the unit studying Mexican culture and heritage, Spanish I and Spanish II students studied the history behind the holiday, created traditional crafts, and made authentic Mexican food.
