It was a hot and sunny day as 20 buses filled with eager runners arrived on Melbourne High School’s campus for the annual Bearkatz Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday, September 6th.
Teams from all over the region traveled to compete with the Katz on their home soil. There were 20 teams in attendance and over 400 runners in 4 separate races. Melbourne had several students earn the distinction of medalist: for the junior girls, Kiley Webb (10:15,2nd place), Kenley McCarn (11:23, 12th place), Audra Blevins (11:25, 13th place), and Abbi Marlin (11:30, 14th place). In the junior boys division, Blake Bledsoe (9:10,3rd place), Aaron Pettyjohn (10:03, 12th place), and Jackson Kimble (10:13, 15th place). For the senior girls, Jordan Webb took the 15th spot with a time of 27:03 while Kolten Smith came in 11th with a time of 20:37. Both junior teams finished strong in their 1.55 mile races, with the junior boys earning 2nd place and the junior girls coming in as 3rd place finishers.
The Melbourne community and MHS are proud of the hard work and effort the cross country athletes have put forth in order to represent their school, as is their coach, Melody Carroll. “I couldn’t begin to tell you how hard these young runners train. They always make me proud to be their coach. As for the Invitational itself, I am humbled and amazed by all the folks who volunteered to help. We definitely couldn’t have done it without them!” Mrs. Carroll wishes to give a special thanks to Sonic and FNBC for donating bottled water for the event.
