Welcome to the team, Dr. Hayes!
Melbourne High School is pleased to introduce its newest science instructor, Dr. Scott Hayes, who is tasked with teaching 9th grade physical science, 11th grade chemistry, and 12th grade physics. Dr. Hayes received a Bachelor of Science degree from Lyon College and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He has had many interesting jobs – from being an ice plant worker and peach pit carver to an assistant instructor in a college lab to a research chemist and group leader with 8 patents and 8 publications. Dr. Hayes is undeniably an asset for the students at MHS!
Having grown up around Cave City, Dr. Hayes decided to leave the corporate world and return to his roots. So it is no surprise that one of his favorite songs is “Where Corn Don’t Grow” by Travis Tritt! Dr. Hayes’ favorite part of teaching is the opportunity to watch kids accomplish something they didn’t think they could and take pride in doing so. As far as the hardest part of teaching, he smiles and says, “You can always do better, prepare more. This makes it a little hard to relax.”
This school year will be the first full year Dr. Hayes has taught at MHS, and so far his educational philosophy has worked perfectly for him. “I want kids to know that there will be opportunities for them to use the knowledge and skills that they learn in science classes and that proficiency in technical subjects can open up doors they haven’t even considered yet.” Dr. Hayes has the drive and heart for teaching, and Melbourne High School is lucky to have him.
