Tenth graders in Mrs. Kelli Swaim’s biology class at Melbourne High School recently headed to the lab to take a hands-on look at the photosynthesis process. As part of the experiment, students were asked to prove the hypothesis that leaf disks placed in sodium bicarbonate will sink as the spaces in the spongy mesophyll begin to fill. The final step of the project required the students to expose the leaf disks to light, record their observations, and create their own hypotheses about the effects of environment variables on the rate of photosynthesis.
